Not every design begins with a story.
Some start with a memory or a place, and others arrive quietly, without much explanation at all. This kids birthday invitation was one of those designs.
I was excited to learn that it was selected as a Minted Editor’s Pick in the Kids Birthday Invitations category, especially because this piece did not come from a specific inspiration or reference. There was no moment I can point to and say, “This is where it began.”
Instead, it came from instinct.
Sometimes when I sit down to design, I am not trying to say something profound or personal. I am simply exploring shape, color, and type, and letting play lead the way. That was very much the case here. I wanted something bold, fun, and confident. Something that felt celebratory without being overly precious.
The result was a design that feels graphic, energetic, and a little bit retro, with a playful Western twist. It is the kind of invitation that feels like it belongs to a kid who knows exactly who they are and is not afraid to take up space.
Getting an Editor’s Pick for a design like this was a reminder that intuition matters. Not every piece needs a long backstory to resonate. Sometimes clarity comes from simplicity, and sometimes the most successful designs are the ones that feel effortless.
This invitation celebrates that kind of creative freedom. The freedom to make something joyful just because it feels right. The freedom to trust your eye, your experience, and your sense of fun.
I am grateful to Minted for recognizing this piece, and for continuing to celebrate designs that feel playful, bold, and full of personality.
